Since 1917, Kansas Counties have had
the option of adopting
the County-Unit plan
for maintaining their roads.
The construction and maintenance
of roads has always been
the most important function of
the township.
.
Largely due to township roads,
Kansas is third in the nation
in the number of maintained
roads and highways.
Only Alaska and Texas
have more.
